Insulation, Protection for Exterior Sprinkler Riser?

For an exposed exterior riser on a wet system, is insulation or mechanical protection required?

If so, what type of insulation is best?

There is already mechanical protection in the form of bollards.

As far as insulation, this arrangement most likely would not be approved in the City of Orlando or in Orange County if it were new construction since we do occasionally get freezing temperatures.

Realistically, you shouldn't have any issues other than those small diameter lines supplying the gauges. Those will freeze if we get a freeze event like we did earlier this year. Almost all of our backflow preventers are outside so, personally, I wouldn't worry about the actual riser.

If you are really worried about freeze protection then the riser should be altered to make a 90 and turn inside with as little exposed pipe as possible. Insulation can make a difference when temperatures drop below freezing for a brief period of time, but if your main riser freezes in this area then it's likely that your exterior backflow preventer has also frozen.

From living in the Southwest, nearly everything is outside and, on occasion, we will see some freezing temps overnight in the more northern parts of town (elevation is higher). We will often see the residential homes have issues but rarely does the commercial side have problems.

I will occasionally see foam/foil wraps around piping & valves but without a heat source or moving water, insulation works both ways keeping the pipe a little warmer, but also not allowing it to heat up.

If there is a mandate for freeze protection, there should be approved guidelines and as the previous reply said, if there is an issue, the piping needs to enter the building as soon as possible.

As to mechanical, the bollards shown seem to provide that, but I have had AHJ's require structural calcs for the harden methods (minimum PSI requirements for the anchorage, minimum impact ratings for the bollard, impact resistance for a minimum speed and weight of vehicle....all specific to the location, path of travel, minimum spacing).

Mechanical protection should always be considered when locating fire risers outside.

If freeze protection is warranted, it is best to locate the riser in a heated environment.

I m not sure if you are just referring to the yellow circles around the “ empty piping” below the FDC check valve or everything.
The bollards shown offer mechanical protection as shown.
A couple things:
Where are the rods for the flange and spigot piece? Close to the building rainwater will erode the earth around it which is why a concrete say 3 x 3 is the best thing to do there.
Fdc caps. Probably not there so the pumper water will drain. Add caps and install a ball drip.,
Supports / braces for both the FDC and the sprinkler riser ? Would that come under your question for mechanical protection? Should be braced for protection.
I would either paint or galvanize the exterior piping ( protection); nipples especially. For “ protection” of piping.,
The circled pipe—- would that require insulation or the riser itself! ?
Hard to say. I m not sure how many times it will get so cold it freezes there or what the frost line is here.
In SC, my frost line is 1 inch.
This is further south of me.
Insulation might help a freezing situation . Protection.

My irrigation water has 1 to 6 inches of cover. Supply to irrigation 1 inch. Water line in no more than 6 inches. That’s why this time of year you are hard pressed for cold water. Winter it’s like cold water.
So I d say that if the underground is 5 feet to top of pipe, the earths temperature will help prevent freezing.,
