Insulation on Sprinkler Pipe Allowed? Separation?

Are there any comments in NFPA that state that we can not insulate sprinkler system sprinklers, or any mandated minimum spacing between insulation and uprights?

I am very curious to know why you would be insulating sprinkler piping in the first place. If it is a freezing environment, then you should provide a dry-pipe system. What do you expect to gain by adding insulation?

Well, depends the systems and the place. In one project the pipe that cross in the Cellar level was exposed in one part in the exterior and all the system was wet and we only haved 4 or 3 heads there. We put insulation and heat trace in the pipe and the heads was Dry Barrel. All depends the context. I didnt read and restriction in the code for what we do

Please provide additional context to the question.
In most scenarios, insulation over sprinkler pipe has no benefit. If this is insulation installed over heat tracing, the typical language found is that for upright sprinklers it shall be insulated up to the top of the reducing bushing (if on springs) with a taper of 45° to avoid spray-pattern obstruction, as detailed in Figure 14 of IEEE 515.1-2012. I am not aware of language based on the sprinklers being installed directly on the branch line.

Installation works both ways so while you may be keeping the pipe(water) from getting too cold, it also prevents it from warming back up.

The final thickness of the insulation will play apart, and whether an upright can be on it or not Attached directly or if it needs a sprig as this is no different than putting a sprinkler directly on a pipe

Without heat trace it’s more of a feel good measure in most cases.

Keep in mind that insulation does not add or remove heat from static water in a pipe, it simply retards the transfer heat and makes it take longer for the water to freeze.

You need a Dry System. No exposed steel pipe between line and sprinkler head. Don’t go there. Big damage claim a coming.

We still don't have an explanation of why this person wants to add insulation in the first place. Is it a water-filled pipe in an area subject to freeing? If so, then it should be a dry system.

As others have stated, insulation alone won't do anything to protect a pipe from freezing. Heat trace needs to be installed in conjunction with insulation to prevent a water filled pipe from freezing.

If you're talking about a full wet system that is now exposed to temperatures below 40°F, the cost for heat tracing and insulating the entire thing might be more than the cost to put a dry system in, it just depends on how extensive it is. Plus, maintenance gets a lot harder when your pipe is buried in insulation.

Typically the only time I'm dealing with heat trace/insulation is when taking a supply through an unconditioned space, such as a standpipe feed crossing from the pump room in a garage to the stair, or a wet main going through a breezeway between connected buildings.

Heat tracing is a potential problem. Often overlooked is that it must be maintained, and regularly inspected and tested.
Lawrence Livermore National Labs is in an area where freezing is very rare, and as a result had both sprinkler and domestic pipe outside. When the rare Great Citrus and Fire Sprinkler Freeze did occur there were LOTS of frozen pipes and broken fittings.
Note that a freeze often does not cause a leak. The problems occur the following mid morning, after the sun comes out. That's when the thaw occurs, and the water flows.
In Oakland, when I was the FPE for the Fire Prevention Bureau, the fire dispatchers received over 200 waterflow alarms in one morning, all of which had to be responded as if they were fires! LLNL installed a lot of heat tape and insulation on fire sprinkler systems, (Probably NOT to any code) and later found they also needed to test and maintain them.
They also installed a lot of indicating Cold Weather Valves, that allow the sprinklers on the loading dock, etc. to be turned off and drained if freezing is anticipated.
