I have a retrofit application where the sprinkler system needs to be supported from Pyro-Bloc, as that is what is making up the structure of the floor above. NFPA-13 (2022) does not allow the use of toggles (that's what the plumbers and mechanical contractors are using), and the material is too brittle to use drop-ins or expanding anchors.

This stuff does not look structural and I'm doubting its ability to hold the 5x + 250 per NFPA....what is holding it up? You'll likely need to penetrate through the Pyro-Bloc into something more robust or create a "reverse" trapeze where the hanger (pipe/unistrut/angle iron) is on top of the bloc and the ATR penetrates through.

Piping must be supported from the building's structure. Pyro-Bloc is an insulation material and does not support building utility systems.

Pyro-Bloc is not structural, nor does it appear in a search for UL listed Fire Resistance Rated Assemblies. The product data sheet from the manufacturer states that this material is for lining industrial furnaces.

Pyro block is ceramic insulation and yes it is not structural and is brittle. It’s probably held in place with a PB tool , a stud gun , that penetrates the block and welds it to the structure above. I m not sure how the structural engineer of record would allow the other trades to hang to it.

This is not really helpful information, but I had to repair a bunch of piping in a historic building that a previous contractor had installed using toggle-Sammys into crown molding that was fastened with finish nails. I can confirm doing anything like this is not a great idea, and that structural approval should be obtained before you do anything to relieve you of as much liability as possible.

NFPA 13 requires a building structure to be capable of supporting a weight equal to 'water filled pipe span plus 250 lb. for EACH. 'Pyro-Bloc' material would not qualify for that. Additionally, the supporting structure shall be 'non-combustible' as defined in NFPA Standards and Handbook. Pyro-Bloc material will lose its structural strength at elevated temperatures during a fire. Therefore, alternate method for supporting the sprinkler system shall be employed.
