Exterior Signage Required for Sprinkler Zones?

I have a 115,ooo sq ft warehouse with a monitored sprinkler system. There is a pump room 200 feet away that has the FACP. The main water supply enters the building, then has three separate risers labeled as system 1, system 2, and system 3.

Is there a fire code that requires the building to have signage on the exterior of the structure indicating where Zone 1, 2, or 3 is?

No there is not. That is what preplans are for.

Of course you could require strobes/annunciators etc that conform to your standard response protocol.

In this situations I would require sprinkler zone maps, showing the whole building, adjacent to the FACP and in the pump room- framed and/or laminated and affixed to the wall. This seems to work well for us.

Happy New Year.

There's nothing in the model codes that would require exterior diagrams. However, the local AHJ may have amended their adoption of the code to require it. I'd recommend scouring their amendments.

We generally provide a poster-size, color coded map in the fire pump room.

No requirement for exterior.

No one will be angry if you name zones 1, 2, and 3 things that make them easier to figure out (I.E.: zone 1 - west system, zone 2 - south system, zone 3 - loading dock).

And once upon a time there was a requirement for a hollow length of pipe that had a copy of the plans to be in the riser/pump room that would really make it obvious, but I've seen remarkably little enforcement for that and even less plans in hollow lengths of pipe.

FYI, the 2025 edition of NFPA introduces the requirement for a Documentation Cabinet (16.11.1.3).

Agree. Just because it’s not required doesn’t mean
It’s not a good thing to do.
I like the strobes for each system on the building wall.
