Electric Dryer Laundry Rooms Require Sprinklers?

Is sprinkler protection required for laundry rooms with electric dryers?

This project is in New York City specifically. Thanks in advance.

In each of the 13, 13D, 13R Standards (2019) under "Equipment Closets:

13D - 8.3.9 requires a sprinkler within closets used for heating and/or air conditioning equipment, washers and/or dyers, or water heaters with the exception allowed in 8.3.8 "...it is located on an exterior balcony/breezeway/corridor that does not have doors/access/unprotected openings into the unit".

13R - 6.6.4 "..within any closet..." with the same exceptions in 6.6.7

13 - Required with no exceptions.

I can't speak to any NYC amendments

The only time "fuel fire equipment" (instead of electric) is specifically used is when it's located in concealed spaces.

To answer your question (and pending a NYC amendment), yes, when the equipment is located in an exterior closet as allowed in the sections noted above.

Yes, per section 903.2.11.13, laundry drying rooms with more than 2 dryers are required to be sprinklered. No distinction is given on the type of dryer (electric or gas).

Exemption 1 of Section 903.2 would not apply as electric dryers are not considered electrical equipment as far the code is concerned. Electrical equipment in that case refers to panels, transformers, disconnect switches, etc.

If your building is sprinklered, then yes this room will also require sprinklers.

The use of the electrical room exception, would not apply.
