Anyone know of an economical way to store 30,000 gallons of Fire Sprinkler water above ground in (2) 15k or (3) 10k poly tanks stored outside in area that can get below 0 degrees in the winter?
1) Can these tanks be insulated? 2) Can these tanks be equipped with immersion heaters? 3) Do these tanks degrade when exposed to the sun? Ideally, we are pushing the client to consider building a structure or Lean-To with some heat to solve all of these questions. Sent in anonymously for discussion. All water tanks can be insulated.

I have used a lot of those tanks fr irrigation and discovered the white tanks do not hold up well to UV, the black and green ones do much better and would stay warmer if the sun heated them up during the day.

If NFPA 22 applies take a look at, section 4.4.1 for tank construction material plus the related chapter based on the tank material and Chapter 16 for tank heating

This page contains useful NFPA 22 information, although the use of this manufacturer's corrugated steel tanks would have to be approved by the AHJ.

Under NFPA 22, poly tanks are not approved for fire protection.

Assuming you're using a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) tank, note that outdoors besides freeze issues you also have to protect from UV and mechanical damage. (NFPA 22 11.6.5). It's been a decade, but I had a similar situation in the upper midwest where we carved out a heated room inside an unheated rural warehouse. With that volume of water, It didn't take much to keep the room above 40degF. As always, the tank manufacturers are good sources of info.

Insulation does not create heat. So an internal ul heater or an approved bubbler should be used .
