In a 3-story building with 3 standpipes, one of which is a combination standpipe/riser, and the standpipes are manual wet, with 50 psi.
On a 5-year test, how do I flow 1000 gpm (no pump) at 100 psi? Do I involve the fire department? The old hydraulic plates showed 70-50 at 260 flow. Three years later, they are showing 50-40 at 320 flow. So I cannot pass this, even though the water supply has diminished. Sent in anonymously for discussion. I'm a little late to the party on this one. While you don't need the FD per se, presuming you have access to a pump, etc - The test is a lot easier if the FD is involved. Most of our AHJ require a nominal fee for this test

There is no need for a flow-test. The five-year flow test prescribed by NFPA 25 only applies to automatic standpipes. See NFPA 25 2026 Ed. 6.3.1.1. The enhanced comments from NFPA LiNK goes on to clarify - "It is important to note that the required flow test only applies to automatic standpipe systems; it excludes manual standpipes."

This is a great article about the same question. This question gets brought up all of the time. I'm currently working with a AHJ that has stated the NFPA 14 A.12.6.2(c) is sufficient for all acceptable testing when it comes to standpipes.
