A three-story dormitory and we have residential-style pendent sprinklers in the corridors with residential sidewall and pendent sprinklers in most of the units.
By code, are the pendent and sidewall sprinklers required to have the same k-factor? Residential k-factors jump around a little and I wasn't sure if the requirement (or industry standard) to not mix k-factors would cover different sprinkler orientations too. Thanks in advance! I don't think there is a requirement not to mix different K factor. It is done all the time, for example, with deluge systems.

See NFPA 13 (2016 Ed) sections 23.4.4.9 through 23.4.4.9.4. I suggest reading the explanatory material in blue as well.

I am curious to others thoughts... but maybe I do not fully understand the question or the application to which they are referring. Example would be hotel/motel. If the room is 14'x24' with a lower ceiling at the entry, it would require a pendent and a sidewall capable of throwing the 24' distance. These two heads would be calculated together and most definitely have different K-Factors.

NFPA does not allow using different k-factor sprinklers for the sole purpose of balancing calculations. But, it is acceptable and common to use different k-factor sprinkler heads in the situation you described. In your example, you would have two different types of sprinkler heads, presumably with different coverage areas. The two different sprinkler heads also have two different orientations - pendent and sidewall. This makes it highly unlikely that a sprinkler with the wrong k-factor would be installed in a location since the installer would have to install a pendent in a location intended for a sidewall or vice versa.
