By code, does the check valve on the discharge side of a fire pump, or jockey pump, need to maintain any specific distance from the pump itself?

No required distance. In actuality, you want the check valve as close to the discharge flange as possible due to the amount of fittings and other valves required on the discharge side of a pump (and the typical undersized pump room). The jockey pump/check valve setup is no different as to location when I do a design.

I second what Dan said. I've never heard of code driven or practical reason for a check valve to be farther from the discharge. I typically plan for a spool piece after the check valve so I can locate my fire pump sensing line on it. This also allows for an adjustment piece if adjustment becomes necessary at this point.
