Can CPVC Be Used for Highrise Sprinkler System?

We have a high-rise building (residential from 5-24 floors).

Can CPVC listed piping be utilized in high‑rise fire sprinkler systems (residential portion), and are there restrictions related to maximum elevation and/or pressure limitations?

There are no elevation restrictions for CPVC. There are a ton of pressure limitations, please review the manufactures cut sheets.

I wouldn't recommend it as good practice. Too many opportunities for pipe to see over pressure on the lower floors. Too many material in compatibilities. If its a relatively small footprint like a hotel or condos ~ 10K sqft large or about then I could see the use case - maybe.

There are pressure limitations I believe nonmetallic is limited to 175psi currently. But even if you have a high rise you likely have PRV’s so that shouldn’t be an issue. You can look through manufacture data sheets on their specific allowances but it can be used in LH occupancies and OH rooms in LH occupancies that are (I believe) 400 sq ft or less.

There are also allowances for it to be exposed.

Use is extensive and common. No restrictions on use outside of the MFG or NFPA.

CPVC use in high-rises is pretty cocmmon. There's no elevation restrictions. The pressure limitations are per the manufactuer, but similar to normal steel pipe and fittings.

Hey Jesse, steel pipe (sch. 10 grooved and 40 threaded) and fittings are commonly 300 psi rating minimum. I have found the limitation for pressures (around 175 psi to 250 psi depending on the make and model) are usually the sprinkler heads, or special valves like a 3-way valve for a gauge.

I have installed CPVC on many high-rise Condominiums and apartment buildings. However, most of the time the vertical is ran in Victaulic pipe or other standard steel pipe, and each floor has a PRV, which transitions to CPVC to supply each floor's zone & each apartment.

Yes, in my jurisdiction we have many high-rise R-2 buildings and they will typically use a steel/CPVC adapter to feed the floors off the riser. I encourage you to read blazemaster or viking plastic's manual as they are very thorough in what can and can't be done with the pipe. A lot of requirements that are not in the code as well.

There are no limitations on elevation or height, as industry consensus—including practices aligned with FM standards—confirms the absence of restrictions based on building height or elevation. CPVC is commonly employed in high-rise structures (e.g., residential buildings ranging from five to over twenty-four floors). The management of gravity and head pressure is achieved through zoning and pressure-reducing valves (PRVs), rather than through restrictions related to material height.

Hey. As noted previously, you may need a pressure reducing valve supplying each lower floor, floor control assembly up to the floor at which churn pressure - gravitational pressure gradient is < pipe pressure rating.

Also, please note, typically this requires a steel standpipe with steel floor control assembly and transition coupling.

Also please note well, all steel pipe MUST be fabricated using CPVC compatible cutting oil.

There are so many bracing restrictions for normal piping and sidewalls to prevent the heads from reacting to the high pressure that it's cheaper to use steel. Cp in LA City is 1.03.
