Adding In-Racks Follow NFPA 13 25.3 or 25.8?

We are adding new in-rack sprinklers to a Class IV Commodity with an existing CMDA sprinkler system above.

Using NFPA 13, 2022, I am so confused on whether I need to use 25.3 or if I can use 25.8 for modification?

I was told that 25.8 is only for modification of the in-rack sprinklers, not the system above, but I am not seeing it that way. The verbiage to me is not clear at all.

When adding new in-rack sprinklers to an existing CMDA system protecting Class IV commodities, should the design follow NFPA 13 (2022) Section 25.3, or can it be treated as a modification under Section 25.8?​

I'd go with 25.3 (or whatever the more stringent requirement is) whenever they conflict, as 25.8 doesn't seem to exist anymore in 2025 edition (I'm sure parts of it have been moved)

As this is a new IRAS system, the design needs to be to 25.3. I~ts not an existing system being modified. And the calculations need to be balanced back to the connection.

I have a hate / hate relationship with IRAS....

That chapter (25.8) should apply as it allows for the storage curves vs the single point design that is new to the 2022. This provides a means for design if the original installation used a density/area further up the curve (lower density/larger area). If the original design aligns with the newer single point design curves, you could apply 25.3.

While not widely used, there are designs that utilized allowances and went up the curve with an increased the area then used reductions to calculate a smaller area and got a break on a K-Factor.

Gotta read things twice..and then checked again

I thought (read) there was an existing rack system/overhead that was being modified, not a new rack system being added to an existing overhead only.

But, if the overhead system was designed for future racking and took allowances along a curve, I can see it applying in either case.
