In a highrise building with a sprinkler system designed under NFPA 13, are above-ceiling smoke detectors required?

It depends ... some high-rise jurisdictions (LA, NYC, Chicago) write custom Fire Code amendments mandating that if sprinklers are omitted from any small concealed space per NFPA 13 permissions, a smoke or heat detector must be provided in its place.

As Todd indicated, need to verify with applicable codes, especially those with local amendments. Based upon national codes and NFPA standards, smoke detection would not be required in your application.

Assuming you are using the IBC with no amendments, the high-rise smoke detection requirements in IBC 907.2.13.1 identify the spaces where smoke detection is required. There are no requirements for total smoke detection coverage throughout the building. Leave a Reply. |
